When your aluminum components need to withstand extreme environments, high wear, or critical tolerances, ordinary coatings won’t cut it. You need a finish that’s tough, lightweight, and built to last. That’s why engineers and manufacturers across the country trust The Lindgren Group for precision hardcoat anodizing services that deliver performance and protection in the harshest operating conditions.
We specialize in Type III hardcoat anodizing, compliant with MIL-A-8625, offering superior abrasion resistance, corrosion protection, and thermal performance for mission-critical components.
What Is Hardcoat Anodizing?
Hardcoat anodizing, also known as Type III anodizing, is an electrochemical process that thickens the natural oxide layer on aluminum surfaces. Unlike decorative anodizing, hardcoat builds a much denser, harder layer—typically between 0.002” and 0.003” thick—providing exceptional durability for high-performance applications.
This process converts the aluminum surface itself, meaning there’s no flaking, peeling, or cracking. It’s commonly used in aerospace, military, and industrial equipment where toughness and reliability are essential.
Benefits of Hardcoat Anodizing
✅ Extreme Wear Resistance
The resulting oxide layer has a hardness of up to 60–70 Rockwell C, protecting parts from abrasion, galling, and erosion.
✅ Superior Corrosion Resistance
With the addition of a seal (hot water or nickel acetate), hardcoat anodized aluminum resists salt spray, humidity, and chemical exposure.
✅ Electrical Insulation
Hardcoat acts as a natural dielectric barrier, making it ideal for isolating components in electronic and aerospace assemblies.
✅ High Heat Tolerance
Unlike paint or soft coatings, hardcoat anodize maintains its integrity in high-temperature environments.
✅ Non-Reflective & Aesthetic Options
We offer black, gray, and natural color options, making it ideal for tactical equipment, optical systems, or visible commercial parts.
Our Hardcoat Anodizing Capabilities
✔️ MIL-A-8625F Type III, Class 1 & 2
We adhere to the strictest anodizing standards for military, aerospace, and defense applications.
- Class 1: Non-dyed
- Class 2: Dyed (commonly black, gray, or dark bronze)
✔️ Coating Thickness Options
Typical builds range from 0.001” to 0.003″, depending on the part geometry, alloy, and performance requirements.
✔️ Seal Options
Choose from unsealed, hot water sealed, or nickel acetate sealed for improved corrosion protection and coloring.
✔️ Masking Services
Precision masking available to protect critical threads, mating surfaces, or conductive zones.
✔️ Dimensional Control
We account for dimensional growth (half of the coating thickness is penetration, half is buildup), ensuring tight tolerance applications are never compromised.

Compatible Aluminum Alloys
While nearly all aluminum alloys can be anodized, certain series respond better to hardcoat treatments:
- Excellent for hardcoat: 6061, 6063, 2024, 7075
- Fair for hardcoat: 3003, 5052
- Not ideal: Cast aluminum alloys (porosity reduces anodizing quality)
We’ll work with you to evaluate your part’s alloy and recommend any necessary preparation steps to ensure optimal results.
