Overview
Black Oxide is a uniform coating for ferrous metals. It is primarily a functional coating offering limited protection under mild corrosive conditions. It requires oil for corrosion protection. It is typically used for parts that cannot tolerate the dimensional change of more corrosion-resistant coatings. Black oxide is also used to decrease light reflection and alkaline oxidation. It is used for wrought iron, cast and malleable irons, plain carbon, and low-alloy steel.
